Abstract

|
Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the postural stability between diabetic polyneuropathic patients and normal age-matched subjects.
Methods: Twenty-nine with diabetic polyneuropathy and 14 healthy age-matched subjects participated in this study. Static and dynamic balance was evaluated using an objective balance test involving computer-controlled dual force platforms enclosed by a visual surround.
Results: For sensory organization test diabetic polyneuropathic patients revealed significant postural instability compared to controls. For motor control test, latency was significantly longer in the diabetic polyneuropathic group than in the healthy group.
Conclusion: This study indicated significant balance loss associated with diabetic polyneuropathy putting the individual at increased risk for falling and gait abnormalities.
